In 1886, when Minnesota train station agent Richard Sears bought a shipment of watches and sold them to earn extra cash, he didn’t know he was about to launch one of the world’s great retail empires. A year later he moved to Chicago, teamed up with watchmaker Alvah Roebuck and started selling watches by catalog.
