In 1861 Bloomingdales was formed when brothers Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale began selling hoop-skirts in their Ladies Notion’s Shop on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. By 1872 they began selling a variety of other items which included; skirts, corsets, European fashions, and some select men’s products. Selling a variety of items was a bit taboo and very risky in the 1800’s. Unbeknownst to the brothers, they had begun to develop the very first department store. After continued success, the brothers moved their store to 59th Street and Lexington Avenue, where it remains an elegant, yet trendy, hot spot today.
