I remember always being one of the tallest girls in my school up until my senior year of high school. I was taller than many of the girls and definitely taller than the boys. I spent last weekend on the beach with my nephew and his buddies. Brought up in the land-locked Midwest, I was unfamiliar with wakesurfing. Much more accessible than the surfing you see on the Hawaiian pipeline, wakesurfing seemed to attract every young guy on the beach, particularly the middle and high school crowds. With wakesurfing there’s no arduous paddle out to deep water; you don’t have to wait for just the right kind of wave action; and it doesn’t take a lot of skill to ride in. Wakesurfing takes place in the shallows close to shore. Wakesurfers skim in and out of the breaking surf, riding the action along the beach on short, lightweight, oval boards.

Probably because a lot of the moves are similar to skateboarding, it didn’t take long for my nephew and his buds, all big skate fans, to pick up the action. They joined the line of guys standing along the beach holding their boards and were soon taking turns showing off their best moves. It looked like so much fun, my sister and I gave it a whirl, much to the amusement of the guys. Shaun White’s heart-pounding second run in the men’s superpipe final on the second stop of the inaugural Winter Dew Tour last Sunday was nothing short of amazing.
